This time, we are geared especially for small and medium enterprises in Japan who are hiring. We find that even with COVID-19 and the restructuring that goes on, there are still critical positions that need to be hired. During this time it’s a good opportunity for small companies to really get strong on their processes and to think through what they are doing (especially for recruitment) to hire the right people, attracting the right people, building up their network with people that can help them later on. So I’ve put together this article (and video series) to help you inexpensively and quickly make an impact on you and your business and your team as they go through and hire. I hope find these useful, and let’s get started.
Let’s start by talking about a tale of two companies. This will get us started on what you can do when you’re pitching a job to recruiters or candidates. A consultant and I went over to an American retail company to talk about a FP&A manager position that they were trying to hire for. We sat down with the HR manager, and she started talking about the role and the duties and the skills, but when she got to talking about the hiring manager, she said “He’s not a very nice person” and “People were leaving because of him.” She just didn’t like working with him. And the consultant and I left that meeting thinking, we don’t feel confident introducing people to that company.
In contrast, in the afternoon, we went over to visit a Germain manufacturer, and the HR came in and she brought with her the president of the company. He talked about the finance manager position that they had, and he was talking about the potential with the company, the career growth that they had, and also all the benefits that came with the position. We left feeling really excited to work for this role. So naturally, when we got back to the office, which role did we want to spend our time helping the company to fill? Obviously it was the one we felt most excited about.
From this I got 3 really important insights about what companies can do if they want to recruit better. First, be positive. This cost nothing. When you’re speaking to a recruiter, or you’re speaking to an applicant, be positive about your company and the people working in in. Be excited to be there; whether you’re the HR or the hiring manager or the president of the company.
#2, talk about the benefits of the position. What it means to work for the company and what is the benefits of working in that company and that team.
And 3rd, talk about how the employee can grow in the company. What’s the career progression for the company? How would this employee evolve once they join your business.
If you follow these 3 important things when you’re meeting with people, it will make them excited to really want to work with your company.
